Marek, our new English assistant

Our English assitant this year comes from Canada, his name is Marek and he used to live in Vancouver.

These are 7 things we learnt on his first lesson. Students in 3º ESO bilingual section have created this article together with their English teacher.

  1. CANADA IS THE SECOND LARGEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD AFTER RUSSIA. ITS CAPITAL IS OTTAWA.

Russia is 17,098,242 square kilometres

Canada is 9,984,670 square kilometres

Spain is 5,990 square kilometres

2. CANADIAN FLAG.

Canadian flag is also known as Maple leaf (hoja de arce), because it has got a maple leaf in it. It is red and white.

3. CANADIAN MONEY

The currency of Canada is the Canadian dollar, 1 Canadian dollar is worth 0.65 euros. Notes are made of plastic so they are very difficult to tear, even if you forget them in your pockets and you wash them, they won’t be destroyed.

4. CANADA IS AN OFFICIALLY BILINGUAL COUNTRY.

English and Frenh are official languages in Canada. Quebec is the only Canadian province where French is the only official language. Outside of Quebec, most Canadians communicate in English.

5. SOME COMMON ANIMALS IN CANADA, which are not so common in Spain.

Marek told us that it is quite common to see raccoons (mapaches) and skunks (mofetas) near houses. Also if you go to natural parks you can see black bears, which are not dangerous like grizzlies, mooses (alces), roe deers (corzos) and coyotes.

6. FAMOUS CANADIAN SINGERS

DRAKE: Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, and entrepreneur
Celine Dion is from Quebec. She is the best-selling Canadian recording artist
Justin Bieber: Canadian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist
Bryan Adams: Canadian guitarist, singer, composer, record producer, photographer, and philanthropist.

7. SPORTS IN CANADA

Marek talked to us about different popular sports in Canada, like soccer (European football), ice hockey, and curling. Curling was the one we were most curious about, as it is not common in Spain.

Were you in Marek’s lesson? Is there anything else you remember about it? Don’t be shy, tell us!
